MALMESBURY SCHOOL RALEIGH EXPEDITION TO INDIA 2011
We are delighted to be able to host the web site for the 2011 Malmesbury School Raleigh Expedition to India.
ABOUT RALEIGH INTERNATIONAL
Raleigh’s core expedition programme provides a transformational experience to volunteers from all walks of life. Since 1984 the charity has enabled over 30000 people to volunteer on over 2000 different development projects overseas. Through working on community, environmental and adventure projects these volunteers not only contribute to the host country, but they also develop new skills and learn to work with people from a large variety of cultures and backgrounds. Team and individual development is facilitated by Raleigh’s employees and volunteer managers to provide a memorable and powerful learning opportunity. Raleigh International’s current expedition countries include India, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Namibia and Malaysian Borneo.
THE MALMESBURY SCHOOL PROJECT
Community projects are the best way for groups, such as the Malmesbury party, to genuinely interact with the local communities and learn about the culture of India.
The Malmesbury group will help in the construction of eco-sanitation units which will enable the group to complete a project during their time at the village, giving them a real sense of achievement having seen the project from beginning to end.
Our party will be working alongside rural villagers who do not currently have access to basic hygienic sanitation facilities in order to provide a sustainable solution. Participants will assist each family in the village to construct their own eco-sanitation facility – a composting toilet. The project will improve villagers’ health through increasing access to safe drinking water in the community by reducing pollution of the local water sources.
Families will also have a continuous supply of rich compost to improve yields and the nutritional value of produce from their own organic fruit and vegetable gardens. Those who do not grow their own produce will have a saleable commodity with which to increase their income.
The project partner for the eco-sanitation project is MYRADA, a Non Governmental Organisation managing rural development programmes in 3 States of South India and providing on-going support.
WHEN, WHERE AND HOW?
The Malmesbury party of 20 students and supporting members of staff will depart for Bangalore in Southern India on 26th July 2011.
The first two days will be spent training and preparing for the Community work project.
The students and staff will spend 12 days working in the remote villages building the eco-sanitation units.
On the 16th day they will leave for a 5 day "Adventure Challenge" in remote Southern India. Adventure Challenge
The adventure challenge is a perfect finale for the expedition. Participants will take part in a series of physical challenges including trekking, orienteering, carrying all necessary kit for survival (including tents, food, cooking equipment, first aid kits, water cans, washing bowls) and camping in extremely remote and protected national reserves including anti-elephant poaching sites. There will be an element of ‘survival’ and it is likely that some parts of the adventure challenge will remain a surprise for the group. The activities will challenge both mental and physical stamina and test leadership and teamwork skills amidst remarkable and varied scenery.
At the end of their exhausting challenge they will return to Mysore and then transfer to Bangalore for return to the UK on 16th August.
The students, from years 11, 12 and 13, will have to raise the funds for the expedition themselves - we hope that you will feel inspired by their commitment and enthusiasm and assist them as they prepare for this wonderful experience.
